Of Seasoned thieves in Githurai

You haven’t lived up until you have experienced the shivers aftersomeone shoves or steals from you in Githurai. You will get a sudden urge to pee. You will tremble in your boots and see the figure in your bank account pass before your eyes in a flash. You will want to scream but nosound will come out. And so you will keep walking, like John Walker (who says such a thing?) Btw I have this friend who whenever he gets drunk and high he says things like, ‘Ndio huyo Yohana Mweusi ameanza kunitembea.’

Githurai is a city where you walk with your antennae all up an in alert mode like a demented grasshopper somewhere in Molo. This is because the thieves there are as good as seasoned chicken breasts in Kempinski. They are good at what they do and they do not apologize for it. They are swift in action like a Nairobian hawker running from kanjo. Maybe that is why it is the only town in which you can shove your phone into your bra in broad daylight and no one will be amused by your actions.

In Githurai, you will be mugged but you will heal very fast. Faster than a Kenyan who has been given an off day earlier than usual from work. You will scurry to the nearest vehicle half-dazed half-calm. Dazed because you realize that just like everyone else, you can be mugged and calm because you just started experiencing life in its realest of forms.

You don’t catwalk in Githurai. No,sister. Huko unatembea tu. Vile unaona watu wanaenda na wewe jirushanishe mzima mzima. First, there is just no space for you make calculated steps. Second, nothing about the place feels safe. A motorbike could well park just next to flabby tomatoes. Pavement ndio barabara.Barabara ndio market. That is just githurai. A city above the law.

Lastly, let no one tell you that Githurai has no good houses They are there, in plenty but the water shortage could give any Kenyan incurable ulcers. However, water is not the most worrying thing about the place. Coming back to an empty house in the evenings is. Those thieves are thorough. They leave no stones unturned. When they attack, they will surely not vacate your house until it is empty.
